Webster's Dictionary defines healing as "...to make sound."
Sound Healing uses sound and vibration to restore one's body, mind and spirit to a sense of wellbeing, balance and harmony
Healing with sound is an ancient wisdom. Indigenous cultures all over the globe have been using some form of sound for
healing since the beginning of civilization. Today sound healing has begun to resurface in the modern world as a powerful
means of promoting health and well being. It is rapidly finding its way into hospitals, clinics, alternative medicine, massage
and hospice centers.
Sound Healing techniques vary but all involve the application of soundwaves and harmonic vibrations to the physical and
subtle energy bodies through the use of instruments including the human voice.
NATURE IS SOUND:
Everything in creation has a pulse, from the movements of the planets to the beat of our heart. Every atom, cell, tissue,
organ and bone in our being is vibrating. That vibration produces sound, even if it is not audible to the human ear. We are
a wonderful symphony of sounds, rhythms, waves, pulses and beats and are connected to all of nature through this sound and
vibration. It seems to make sense that if we are all vibrating with sound, if we all have our own melody or symphony of sound,
if our atoms are called tiny musical notes by quantum physicists, then why not use sound to promote health in our lives.
Even our language is intertwined with sound and musical references:
that sounds right....; I really resonate with that idea, person, place...; ...of sound mind and body; ...safe and sound....;
well toned muscles; ..I feel in tune or all tuned up, upbeat...;
...I'm out of synch....; I'm on the same wave length.
Just begin listening, and you will hear how much we are connected to the world by sound and its principle of resonance.
THE LAW OF RESONANCE:
Resonance is the rate at which an object vibrates. Everything resonates at a certain vibratory frequency. The frequency
of wave forms is measured in cycles per second or hertz (hz).
When two objects come together of similar frequency they resonate with each other. When you meet someone and feel like
you "click" you are resonating at a similar vibratory rate.
Sympathetic resonance results when wave forms (sound waves) of similar frequency enter into phase (or "lock in")
with each other.
Two people who resonate with each other or are rhythmically entrained, while in conversation may say the same thing at
the same time. They are on the same wavelength.
Entrainment is the ability of a strong rhythmic vibration of one object to change the less powerful vibration of another
object and cause them to synchronize their vibration. Entrainment is universal in nature. It is the tendency of everything
to vibrate in harmony.
Forced Resonance is when you apply a powerful harmonic sound vibration to a person or object and that person begins to
resonate or entrain at the cellular level to the harmonic sound. If someone is out of balance, out of synch and you apply
a strong harmonic sound, they will begin to synchronize in harmony.
If our cells are vibrating and making sound, if we are all each our own symphony of sound, then when we are in balance
all our cells are playing in harmony with each other (homeostasis). When we are feeling out of synch, perhaps some of our
cells, an organ, a tissue is not playing in harmony with the rest of the cells. If we apply harmonic vibrations through a
variety of sound healing instruments, all the cells will begin to resonate with the harmonic vibrations and the symphony of
sound will once again begin to play in harmony.
Through sound it is possible to change the rhythms of our brainwaves, our heart beat and our respiration affecting the
overall health and balance of a person.

INCLUDING SOUND IN YOUR LIFE:
Ways you can begin to include sound for healing in your life:
Toning
Toning for chakra balancing
Overtoning
Chanting
Singing
Listening to healing music
Listening to nature
Listening to your breath or heartbeat
Playing an instrument
Using Himalayan or Crystal singing bowls
Receiving a sound massage
ABOUT SOUND MASSAGE:
Patrice incorporates the harmonic vibrations of sound healing technology into her massage practice. She combines the deep
relaxation of massage with ancient sound healing tools to create a profound healing experience. Patrice uses her voice to
tone and overtone to open, clear, charge and balance chakras, or to reduce pain and help restore a sense of balance and harmony.
In addition, Patrice incorporates tuning forks (Acutonics system) to acupuncture points to open energy meridians and increase
energy flow and release blockages. Drums, bells, rattles, didgeridoo, chimes and crystal and Himalayan singing bowls can be
used during a session. All these tools serve to apply sound waves of harmonic vibrations, a sound bath, if you will, so that
every cell, begins to resonate to the vibration of harmony. This inner and outer deep and relaxing sonic massage nourishes
you on all levels, connecting you with your peaceful and balanced self.
Every session is different and everyone experiences sound vibrations according to the intention of the session. All have
deeply relaxing experiences but some have profound insights or releases, or feelings of coming home. Brainwaves slow down
to alpha or theta, where we experience dream images reflecting our inner wisdom and where healing can occur.
Patrice feels that this unique form of "sonic massage" will soon be a regular practice among massage therapists
and other bodyworkers.
PATRICE'S JOURNEY WITH SOUND:
I was introduced to sound healing several years ago while experiencing a dark night of the soul during a midlife crisis.
My health had suffered after 20 years of giving massage full time. I had low thyroid and adrenal exhaustion and depression.
Trying to get back to a healthy state, I tried everything, treating my thyroid, rest, acupuncture, energywork, shamanic work,
rest, massage, nutrition, supplements, you name it I tried it over a 10 year period. Finally, I made the decision to quit
working. I slept 12-14 hours a day for a year and a half, very depressed, not knowing how to recover, I spent alot of time
praying. One day I was introduced to sound when a friend put a tibetan singing bowl on my heart after giving me a massage.
My heart blew open, I connected with everything! It was quite a transformational moment. After that, I actually felt energy
and joy that I hadn't felt in over 10 years. I began to read more and began toning and then taking classes from sound pioneers
such as Jonathan Goldman (Colorado)and Chris James (Australia), among others.
By the time I met Chris, my health was back to normal, I finally felt normal in my physical and emotional body. I know
it was my regular sound practice that has led to my health. Over the last few years, travelling and studying, I've met many
people with similar stories. People in deep depression or grief or physical ailments that recovered by a regular practice
of sound in their daily lives.
The rest of the story is that I never have been musically inclined, I didn't sing much because I couldn't remember words
to songs and got my feelings hurt along the way with people telling me to shut up... In hindsight, I can see the hundreds
of incidents that led to me not having voice; to a throat chakra that was damaged and all choked up. Our voice is our most
powerful healing tool. Its our natural gift to releasing pain and energy. If the voice gets shut down, it effects our health
on all levels.
I am passionate about teaching people how to use their voice for healing. You don't have to be musical, or have a pretty
voice or remember the words to songs. Listen to the children. Kids are always making sounds, its a natural thing. Somewhere
along the line our culture has lost the ability to use the voice for healing.
Its time we got it back. Its necessary for our individual health and for the health of the planet. Its that big, its that
profound to bring sound in some form back into your life. So tone the sound "ah"; or sing, or chant or listen, just
listen: to the wind, to the birds, to your breath or heart beat. It will begin to bring you back into balance.
I recommend beginning to read the many books on this subject. Its quite fascinating. Its very scientically based and yet
its also esoteric and spiritual in its practice. It has a way of peeling layers of pain and fear and old patterns to uncover
the true self. Hence it is often described as a powerful tool for personal transformation. Hundreds of years of research
backs up the reasons for the healing effects of sound. The indigenous cultures, the major religions, the greatest philosophers,
mystics and scientists of our time knew that sound is a profound healing tool.
I hope my sharing my story of healing and the classes I teach will inspire you to bring sound in some form into your life.
SOUND BITES:
The work of the 5th chakra, the throat, involves fine tuning our own vibration for clearer self expression and communication
with others and a general sense of harmony within us and in our surrounding environment.
Native Americans have referred to the throat chakra as the center of creation.
Stories of cosmogenesis in cultures all over the world throughout civilization include the beginning of creation as including
a sacred vibration. "In the beginning was the Word..."
The basic tone of your voice is the source of your own healing. Singing your basic fundamental tone charges you with balanced
energy.
Treating the whole being is the foundation for sound therapy.
To heal is not to cure but to return oneself to wholeness.
Sound helps us quiet our minds and move deeply into our hearts.
Sound influences us on every level; mental, emotional and spiritual.
The simplest way of communicating with cells is through vibration.
External vibrations cause a sympathetic resonance and entrainment in the cells.
Sound elevates the soul. Chanting, prayer and music gives us energy and peacefulness.
Sound is food for our body and soul.
Sound is a critical nutrient for our brain--it stimulates and charges the neocortex with electrical impulses.
Hearing is the first sense that develops in utero. The only bones fully formed at birth are those of the middle ear.
The high water content of the body's tissue helps to conduct sound. The effect is likened to a deep massage at the cellular
level.
Toning is a system of healing that utilizes vowel sounds, breath and intention to alter vibrations in every molecule and
cell in the body.
Edgar Cayce in the early 1900's made the statement "sound will be the medicine of the future."
...and the future is NOW!
